Abstract

According to the general perception of Muslim society, only man can be an Imām in congregational prayer (Salāt al-Jamā’ah). But number of traditions in traditional Muslim literature reveal that woman can also be an Imām in Salāt al-Jamā’ah. In recent years legitimacy of Imāmat of woman has been a subject of hot debate in traditionalist and modernist religious circles. This paper attempts to examine such kind of traditions and thoughts. It explores that Imāmat of woman for woman has been accepted generally, as for Imāmat of woman for men is concerned there are three schools: one rejected it, the second accepted it only for Nawāfil and the third justifies it for all kinds of prayer.  This study claims that Imāmat of woman is not prohibited in Islamic Sharī’ah. She can do Imāmat where it is needed.
