Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Research Papers

Research Papers published in Al-Qamar present original, scholarly, and well-documented research in Islamic learning and related fields of knowledge. Submissions may address areas such as Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, Sīrah, Fiqh and Islamic Law, Sufism, Philosophy, Theology, classical and contemporary Muslim thought, and issues related to Muslim societies.

Research Papers must make a clear academic contribution through original analysis, sound methodology, critical engagement with primary and secondary sources, and proper documentation. Submissions may be written in English, Urdu, or Arabic and must follow the journal’s scope, submission guidelines, reference style, publication ethics, and double-blind peer review policy.

Review Essays

Review Essays in Al-Qamar provide critical and analytical discussion of one or more books, scholarly works, theories, debates, or recent developments related to Islamic learning and Muslim societies. Submissions may engage with areas such as Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, Sīrah, Fiqh and Islamic Law, Sufism, Philosophy, Theology, Muslim thought, and contemporary issues concerning Islam and Muslim communities.

Review Essays should evaluate the contribution, argument, methodology, scholarly relevance, and originality of the works or ideas under review. They should go beyond summary and offer critical reflection, comparative insight, and meaningful academic analysis. Submissions may be written in English, Urdu, or Arabic and must follow the journal’s submission guidelines, reference style, publication ethics, and double-blind peer review policy.

 
 

Scholarly Commentary

Scholarly Commentaries published in Al-Qamar are concise academic contributions that offer critical reflection, informed analysis, and scholarly discussion on significant issues related to Islamic learning, Muslim societies, contemporary debates, intellectual trends, or recent academic developments.

Submissions may address areas such as Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, Sīrah, Fiqh and Islamic Law, Sufism, Philosophy, Theology, classical and contemporary Muslim thought, and issues concerning Islam and Muslim communities in global and Pakistani contexts.

Scholarly Commentaries should present a clear argument or perspective supported by relevant academic evidence. They should not merely express personal opinion; rather, they should provide reasoned analysis, critical insight, and meaningful contribution to scholarly discussion. Commentaries are usually shorter and more focused than full research papers.

Submissions may be written in English, Urdu, or Arabic and must follow the journal’s submission guidelines, reference style, publication ethics, and editorial or double-blind peer review policy.

Monographs

Monographs published in Al-Qamar are extended scholarly studies that provide in-depth, original, and well-documented research on a specific topic within Islamic learning and related fields of knowledge. Submissions may address areas such as Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, Sīrah, Fiqh and Islamic Law, Sufism, Philosophy, Theology, classical and contemporary Muslim thought, and issues related to Muslim societies.

Monographs should present a sustained argument, comprehensive analysis, strong methodology, and detailed engagement with primary and secondary sources. They are expected to make a significant academic contribution and may be longer and more detailed than regular research papers.

Submissions may be written in English, Urdu, or Arabic and must follow the journal’s scope, submission guidelines, reference style, publication ethics, and double-blind peer review policy.
