Characteristics of the State of Madinah and the Islamic Welfare State

Abstract

This article presents the main features of the state of Madinah, which are the guiding principles for making any state a modern Islamic welfare state. Explaining the concept of the welfare state and its basic foundations in the light of Riyāsat-i-Madinah Model, it concludes that the model of the state of Madina can be of great help in establishing a modern Islamic welfare state in the style. There is a need for the rulers and leaders to understand these guiding principles and make the implementation of divine law possible. Eligible persons should be appointed for state office bearers who are impartial, highly educated and have a good reputation and have a system of accountability in which the media and judiciary besides the people can play a full role. Leaders involved in corruption should be disqualified in the next elections and they should be punished.
