"Al-Tafsīr al-Munīr" and Sīrah of the Prophet: Methodology and Prominent Discussions

Abstract

Numerous verses of the Holy Quran contain important information about the life of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). While interpreting such verses, the commentators have been discussing various aspects of the Sīrah of the Prophet. The present paper studies Sīrah related discussions from "Al-Tafsīr al-Munīr”, a distinguished commentary of the Quran by a renowned jurist and exegete Wahbah al-Zuhaiylī (1932-2015). It finds that al-Zuhaiylī has beautifully dealt with the topics related to Prophetic Sīrah. Al- al-Zuhaiylī’s work seems to be distinguished from other commentaries. His methodology is unique and appealing in the compilation of Sīrah traditions, in depiction of Sīrah topics, in description of characteristics and distinctions of the Prophet, etc. This commentary can provide important material on the subject to scholars and students undertaking research on Sīrah.
