Abstract

Non-Muslim citizens living in an Islamic society have a special status and are treated in a particular way. The non-Muslims are known as Ahlul Dhimmi in an Islamic state. The Dhimmi means covenant, guarantee and protection. They are called so because they have been offered such a covenant by Allah, His messenger and the followers of Islam that provides them protection of a safe and secure life in an Islamic community.  Therefore, on the basis of this covenant, they are under the protection and safety of Muslims. By virtue of this covenant, they become entitled to get all the rights which a state gives to its people after getting citizenship, and they have to fulfill the same responsibilities as well. In this article, where discussions has been held on the rights of non-Muslims in an Islamic society and state, a research-based review has also been taken about the obligations and responsibilities that Islam wants non-Muslims to fulfill in return of these rights so that they could play a positive role as a responsible citizen of the society.
