Abstract

Investigation of the authenticity of ḥadīth has been an important subject in the history of ḥadīth sciences. Scholars of ḥadīth have been working hard to check the authority and authenticity of ḥadīth since the beginning of its compilation. Ḥadīth commentators have also been doing efforts to investigate the Isnād of relevant prophetic traditions in their commentaries according to the established parameters. This paper studies Maulānā Khalīl Ahmad Sahāranpūrī’s efforts regarding the authenticity of the prophetic traditions classified by Imām Abī Dāwūd in his collection of traditions named Sunan Abī Dāwūd. It finds that he puts forward his viewpoint with logical reasoning and authentic allusions while discussing the authority of relevant traditions in various places.
