Zakat Institutions and Their Impact on Socio-Economic Development and Empowerment

Abstract

This study examines the role of zakāt institutions in promoting sustainable development and socio-economic empowerment within the contemporary framework of sustainable finance. It approaches zakāt as a religious financial obligation with interconnected spiritual, social, and developmental dimensions that extend beyond immediate financial assistance to encompass social justice, economic stability, and social solidarity. The study explores the potential of zakāt as a major instrument of Islamic social finance in addressing poverty, social vulnerability, income inequality, and economic exclusion, with particular emphasis on shifting from short-term relief toward long-term empowerment and sustainable development. It also examines the position of zakāt within the broader Islamic social finance system alongside waqf, voluntary charity (ṣadaqah), and qarḍ ḥasan (benevolent loan), highlighting its distinctive features, including the regularity of its resource base, clearly defined beneficiaries, and strong connection with the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah). Furthermore, the study considers the growing global emphasis on sustainable finance, which seeks to integrate economic growth with social justice and inclusive development. Against this background, it investigates the extent to which contemporary zakāt institutions can contribute effectively to sustainable development and socio-economic empowerment, while addressing the institutional, administrative, and economic challenges that may limit their effectiveness. The study argues that effective institutional governance, strategic resource management, and integration with broader Islamic social finance mechanisms can enhance the developmental impact of zakāt and strengthen its contribution to inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development.
