This study examines Arabic-Urdu translation as a complex linguistic and cultural process that extends beyond the substitution of words between two languages. Despite the deep historical, religious, and lexical connections between Arabic and Urdu, translators encounter significant challenges arising from differences in syntactic structure, semantic development, idiomatic usage, rhetorical expression, cultural context, and specialized terminology. The study analyzes the principal linguistic and cultural difficulties involved in translating from Arabic into Urdu and from Urdu into Arabic, with particular attention to sentence structure, context-dependent meaning, idioms, metaphor, technical terms, forms of address, and culturally embedded expressions. It also discusses the translator’s responsibility to maintain fidelity to the source text while producing a clear, accurate, and natural target text. Drawing on insights from classical Arabic scholars and modern translation theory, the study emphasizes meaning-oriented translation, contextual interpretation, functional equivalence, subject-matter competence, and systematic revision as essential strategies. The findings demonstrate that lexical similarity between Arabic and Urdu can facilitate translation but may also create misleading equivalences when shared forms have developed different meanings or usages. The study concludes that successful Arabic-Urdu translation requires integrated linguistic, cultural, contextual, and disciplinary competence, and recommends strengthening specialized translator training, terminology resources, comparative research, and academic cooperation between Arab and Pakistani institutions.
