This research examines the life and poetry of Sulayk ibn al-Salaka, one of the most prominent (ṣaʿālīk) poets of the pre-Islamic period. It aims to shed light on the social and personal circumstances that led him to adopt the life of a ṣuʿlūk, particularly poverty, and racial discrimination. The study explores how these harsh conditions profoundly influenced his poetic experience and shaped the thematic and stylistic features of his poetry. Special attention is given to major themes such as hunger, poverty, endurance, self-reliance, and pride in personal dignity, as well as to the realistic and direct language that characterizes his verse. Furthermore, the study highlights Sulayk ibn al-Salaka’s literary position among the ṣaʿālīk poets, demonstrating how his poetry serves as an important social document that reflects the realities of marginalized groups in pre-Islamic Arabian society. Through this analysis, the study explores the human and artistic value of Sulayk’s poetic legacy within the broader framework of early Arabic literature.
